Sarah Sjostrom will take a break from swimming competition in 2025, but could bid for a sixth Olympics in 2028.
What happened?
A representative for Sjöström confirmed the swimmer's plans, which were reported by Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter on Saturday.
Sjöström won the 50m and 100m freestyles at the Paris Olympics, becoming the second-oldest female swimming gold medalist in an individual event at age 30.
Why it matters for Sarah Sjostrom
Sjöström has competed at every Olympics and World Championships since the 2008 Beijing Games, when she was 14.
She is a 25-time world championships medalist, ranking second in women's swimming history behind Katie Ledecky with 26 medals.
What comes next?
Sjöström does not plan to add to her totals at next summer's worlds in Singapore, but could try to at the 2027 Worlds in Budapest ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
She owns the most individual world medals of any swimmer with 20, and is third in individual golds with 14, behind Ledecky and Michael Phelps.
Sjöström had an extremely easy time competing in the fall of 2022 and 2023, and her body responded very well to that.
She will train, but at a low load and then slowly increase, as she believes that is the best way to last in the long run.
Sjöström got married in September and has been competing at a high level for many years, with her first Olympics in 2008.
She will be almost 35 years old when the Olympics are decided in LA, and she has to think about her future in the sport.
Sjöström's plans were reported by Dagens Nyheter, with the swimmer stating that she has no competitions planned for 2025.
She may try to qualify for her sixth Olympics, which would be an awesome achievement, especially if she can be close to the times she swam in Paris.
Sjöström's focus will be on the 50m freestyle event, where she has had great success in the past.
She will have to think about her body and how it responds to training, as she has had easy times competing in the past.
Sjöström's break from competitive swimming will give her time to rest and recover, and she may come back stronger in the future.
